Infinite Possibilities in Retirement: Rewriting the Rules
One of the things that fascinates me, as a retirement coach and as a woman at the tail end of the Baby Boomer generation, is how deeply our conditioning shapes the way we move through the world, even into retirement. It’s the stories we carry that can keep us small or open us up to what’s truly possible. There are infinite possibilities in retirement.
I’m 61. My generation was raised by parents who lived through the Great Depression and WWII. Duty, sacrifice, and conformity were the air they breathed so of course they passed those values on to us. Many of us became hardworking, loyal, practical adults who prided ourselves on doing what was responsible.
For decades, I lived that way too. I chose a stable career over my artistic side because it felt “sensible.” My father, a gifted woodworker and painter, did the same. He took on a secure job to support our family, putting his creative gifts on the back burner.
It worked. Until it didn’t.
Because here’s what I’ve learned: doing what’s expected and doing what’s right for you are not always the same thing.
Change Is the Only Constant
I used to remind my team that “change is the only constant.” The world changes and so do we. Our edges soften, our old beliefs shift. What felt non-negotiable at 30 or 40 can feel irrelevant at 60 or 70.
And yet, so many of us still cling to old rules about what retirement “should” look like.
Rules like:
✅ Be sensible.
✅ Play it safe.
✅ Don’t dream too big.
✅ Stay busy, but not too bold.
It’s powerful to realize those rules don’t have to run the show anymore. Again, there are infinite possibilities.
Infinite Possibilities: What Retirement Can Look Like
I know so many women like me who are practical, caring, resilient and feel a tug for “something more” that doesn’t fit the old playbook.
I see a new story emerging for myself, my clients, and my family.
My two grown children are less than three years apart, but from different generations: Millennial and Gen Z. Watching them has opened my eyes to how the “rules” keep evolving. They value different things. They question the old trade-off of money over meaning. They remind me that we can choose differently at any age.
So what does rewriting the rules look like now?
It looks like retirees…
✨ Starting second or third careers for joy, not necessity
✨ Creating art, coaching, or consulting on their own terms
✨ Traveling solo or with friends who inspire them
✨ Prioritizing play, rest, and wellbeing
✨ Showing up in ways that feel vibrant, modern, and true
Because when you do, retirement stops feeling like an ending — and starts feeling like your most intentional chapter yet.
Your Turn: Which Rules Are You Ready to Break?
As Mike & the Mechanics sang, “Every generation blames the one before…” But maybe it’s less about blame and more about awareness.
Our parents did what they needed to do. Now, we get to choose differently.
So I invite you to pause and ask yourself:
👉 What old stories about retirement are you still carrying?
👉 Which ones feel heavy, outdated, or simply untrue for who you are today?
👉 What could be possible if you rewrote just one of those rules?
Let’s Keep Rewriting Together
I believe this chapter can be the most vibrant yet if we dare to question the rules that no longer serve us.
What’s one “rule” you’re ready to break in your retirement? I’d love to hear how you plan to tap into those infinite possibilities.
And if you’re ready for a thinking partner to help you rewrite your own retirement story, I’d love to walk alongside you. Your future is still yours to design, on your terms.
